If We’re Lucky (2024)

abstract mixed media sculpture
chicken wire, plaster, acrylic, powder pigment, ink

This piece, a narrative abstract, was my first leap back into art-making after not painting consistently since my studio art minor in college. Its story: We're each born on this planet with an innate set of creative gifts and vision—every kid is an artist because every kid has wonder, curiosity, and a propensity for play. As we get older, we tend to be corralled, from external and internal forces. We get molded by people's good intentions of trying to make us into humans who will survive this world. It's common for people to give up their creative outlets as adulthood hits hard—there is little room to create-for-creations-sake in the world of bills and endless to-do lists. But, if we're lucky, our creativity will demand to be heard. And, if we're lucky, we'll be able to listen. This piece is linear, meant to be looked at from left to right, following the timeline of a human's life. May we all become so full with our own magic that we can't help but break back open in a kaleidoscope of color.
